Your State Privacy Rights

Last updated October 10, 2026. This page supplements our Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.

Our promises — in every state

We give these protections to every family in all 50 states and DC, whether or not your state's law requires them:

  • We do not sell personal information, and we do not “share” it for cross-context behavioral (targeted) advertising.
  • We never sell or use minors' data for targeted ads, and we don't profile students to make decisions with legal or similarly significant effects.
  • We collect only what the service needs. Sensitive information (like heritage or financial-need details) is optional, used only to match scholarships, and can be deleted any time in Settings.
  • We don't use your personal information to train AI models.
  • We protect data with encryption and access controls, and we will notify you and authorities of a data breach as required by your state's breach-notification law.
  • We won't discriminate against you for using any privacy right.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you (or a parent or guardian for a minor, or an authorized agent) may have the right to:

  • Know and access the personal information we have about you, and get a copy in a portable format (you can also download it any time in Settings).
  • Correct inaccurate information.
  • Delete your information (or delete your account in Settings).
  • Opt out of the sale of personal data, targeted advertising, and certain profiling. (We don't do these, so there is nothing to opt out of — but you may still ask.)
  • Limit the use of sensitive information and withdraw consent you gave.
  • Get a list of the categories of third parties we disclose data to.
  • Appeal if we decline your request.

How to make a request

  1. Email support@tryscholarships.com with the subject “Privacy Request,” from the email on your account. Tell us your state and what you're asking for.
  2. We'll verify your identity (for example, by confirming from your account email) and respond within 45 days. If we need more time, as some laws allow, we'll tell you why.
  3. Appeals: if we deny your request, reply with the subject “Privacy Appeal.” We'll answer within 60 days. If you're still unhappy, you can contact your state Attorney General.

Requests are free. Parents and guardians can make requests for children under 18.

Who we share data with

Only service providers who help us run TryScholarships, under contracts that limit their use of your data: our hosting and database providers, Stripe (payments), our AI provider for Scout (questions you send it, never sensitive details), and our email/customer messaging provider. We may disclose information if the law requires it.

California residents

  • Categories we collect: identifiers (name, email); account and profile details (grade, school, state, activities, GPA and test scores you enter); optional sensitive data (heritage, financial-need indicators, military connection) that you choose to provide; documents you upload; purchase records (from Stripe — never full card numbers); usage data needed to run the site.
  • Purposes: providing matching, roadmaps and tracking; payments; customer support; security; legal compliance.
  • Retention: while your account is active; deleted when you delete your account, except records we must keep by law (like payment records). Income-proof files are deleted right after review.
  • We do not sell or share personal information, including of consumers under 16. Shine the Light: we don't disclose personal information to third parties for their own direct marketing.

Nevada residents

We do not sell covered information as defined by Nevada law. You may still submit an opt-out request to support@tryscholarships.com.

Students and schools

TryScholarships is a consumer service families sign up for directly; it is not provided by or on behalf of a school. If a school ever uses TryScholarships with its students, we will follow applicable student-privacy laws (such as FERPA and state student data privacy laws) and the school's agreement.

Your consumer rights

Nothing in our Terms of Service — including our no-refund policy or limits on liability — takes away any right you have under your state's consumer protection laws that cannot be waived by contract.
